The incident happened on Sunday, April 2, when a Florida man entered the airport's security checkpoint and the X-ray unit alerted Transportation Security Administration officers to inspect his carry-on bag.

After looking inside the bag, officers found a 9mm handgun loaded with 10 bullets, including one that was in the weapon's chamber. The man's bag also contained two gun magazines packed alongside the firearm that were each loaded with 20 bullets, according to TSA Spokesperson Lisa Farbstein.

Westchester County Police then confiscated the gun and ammunition and arrested the man on a weapons charge.

In addition to his charge, the man also faces a financial civil penalty of up to $15,000 for bringing a gun to a TSA security checkpoint.

The incident marks the third time in 2023 that TSA officers at Westchester County Airport have found a gun at the security checkpoint.

Firearms are only allowed on flights if they are unloaded, packed in a hard-sided locked case, and placed in checked baggage. They must also be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared while still locked in their case, according to Farbstein.
